Hockey Programs

The GMHA offers multiple minor hockey programs at various levels.
Hockey School: Instructional “learn hockey” programme focusing on skating fundamentals, balance, moving with equipment, etc. Targeted at children ages 4 through 6. One hour a week, Saturday mornings
IP (Initiation Programme): Instructional hockey programme focusing on all hockey fundamentals including skating, puck handling, balance, passing, shooting, position, team play, etc. Targeted at children 5 through 7, depending on ability. Two hours a week.
House League (Base Program): Recreational hockey program for players ages 8 through 18 (Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam & Midget). Targeted at children interested in playing hockey in a fun, challenging environment. Body contact starting at Peewee (age 11).
GMHA Travel Hockey
GMHA offers competitive travel hockey programs for players aged 8 (Novice) through Juvenile (19). Travel hockey is targeted at children interested in playing competitive hockey throughout the Niagara region and other locations – tournaments, exhibition games, etc. Players must try-out and be selected to play on a travel team. Minimum two hours a week but typically 3 or more, including away games. There are multiple teams depending on the age level as follows:
Novice: Major Novice (age 8, birth year 2000)
Novice AE (mixed 8 year olds (birth year 2000) and 7 year olds (birth year 2001)
Atom: Minor Atom (age 9, birth year 1999)
Major Atom (age 10, birth year 1998)
Atom AE (mixed 9 & 10 year olds)
PeeWee: Minor Peewee (age 11, birth year 1997)
Major Peewee (age 12, birth year 1996)
Peewee AE (mixed 11 & 12 year olds)
Bantam: Minor Bantam (age 13, birth year 1995)
Major Bantam (age 14, birth year 1994)
Bantam AE (mixed 13 & 14 year olds)
Midget: Midget AE (mixed 15 (birth year 1993), 16 (birth year 1992) & 17 year olds (birth year 1991)
Major Midget (mixed 16 & 17 year olds, primarily 17 year olds)
Juvenile: One team, mixed 18 year old (birth year 1990) and 19 year olds (birth year 1989)
GMHA Travel teams for Major Novice, Major/Minor Atom, Major/Minor Peewee, Major/Minor Bantam and Major Midget have already been selected at try-outs that occured in April 2008. If you are new to town or missed try-outs for some other reason, please contact Rob Hersics.
GMHA Travel Hockey fees are assessed at the team level, not the individual player level. Teams pay association fees of $7700 which includes, per-player fees that cover extra ice time and referee fees, entrance into the GMHA applicable GMHA Travel Hockey Tournament (Bantam-Midget in late Oct, Novice thru Peewee in eary January).
